Scattered Storms Today, Severe Weather Possible Sunday

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue on and off throughout the Rochester area today. It looks like the activity will wind down though later this afternoon.

The slow-moving storm system responsible for today's storms is one that will stay with us well into next week, continuing the rain chances. We will get a brief break from the rain though tonight into Saturday.

On and off showers and storms are expected Sunday and Monday. We are tracking the potential for severe weather around the Rochester area during this time frame as well, especially on Sunday afternoon/evening. Large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes could be possible! We'll continue to monitor the scenario.

“Corvettes on the Plaza”

The Rochester Downtown Alliance is teaming up with the Rochester Area Corvette Enthusiasts to bring “Corvettes on the Plaza” to downtown Rochester. The first of 5 events will take place on Saturday, May 18th from 12:00-4:00pm. This event will take place on the Peace Plaza in downtown Rochester.

Rochester Woman Sentenced to 20 Years For Helping Terrorist Group

Minneapolis, MN - (AP) - A Rochester woman convicted of conspiring to send money to the terrorist group al-Shabab in Somalia has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Amina Farah Ali was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on 13 terror-related counts. Each count held a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

Authorities say Ali and her co-defendant, Hawo Mohamed Hassan, went door-to-door raising money in the name of charity, but routed the funds to al-Shabab.

Their attorneys say the women are humanitarians who gave money to orphans, as well as to a group working to push foreign troops out of Somalia.

Hassan is also being sentenced on Thursday. They are among nine people sentenced this week in the long-running federal investigations into terror recruiting and financing for al-Shabab.

Sunny & 80 Today, Stormy Friday

A sunny Thursday with a high right around 80 today in Rochester, with the rain holding off until well after sunset. This will be just the beginning of a very active weather pattern, as another slow-moving storm system impacts the Upper Midwest through the weekend, even into next Tuesday!

Showers and thunderstorms emerge late Thursday and continue into Friday. It's enough to keep the temps cooler, in the lower 70s around the Rochester area on Friday.

The weekend will be on and off rain, with temperatures warming back up into the 80s both days. The setup looks favorable for some strong to severe storms to develop. Too early for the details though, but as always we will be tracking it, so stay tuned!

6-Year-Old Boy Undergoes Heart Transplant At Mayo

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) - A 6-year-old boy who has spent the last six months in intensive care has undergone heart transplant surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Cameron Ulrich was born with a rare heart defect and has survived in recent months hooked to a machine that functioned as his heart and lungs. The Oak Park Heights boy has been waiting for a heart since mid-October. That finally happened on Wednesday.

The Star Tribune says doctors at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis implanted a pacemaker when Cameron was just 12 days old. His family says his heart worked fairly well until last year when an echocardiogram revealed the organ was failing.

Cameron is expected to spend another three months at Mayo recovering.

Century Student Accepted to West Point Program

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Out of 5,000 students nationwide, a Rochester student has been selected to attend a prestigious program at West Point. Josh Grove Century junior is hoping a week at West Point academy will help him accomplish his dreams.

"Both my grandpas served in the army, I've kind of always had that urge to serve," said Josh Grove.

Josh Grove has long dreamed of attending West Point Military Academy. When he heard about its summer leadership experience program. He jumped at the chance to spend a week at the academy. One problem though, with more than 5,000 applicants and less the 500 spots, the odds of making it were slim.

"I had kind of given up hope, so when I got the letter that I had made it I was like, whoa," said Josh Grove.

Josh's dad, Dale Grove, knew Josh had it in him to make the cut.

90s & 100s Gone, 70s Return Today

Tuesday's record high of 97° in Rochester was very impressive, especially after starting out at 52°, however it was only for a day. A cold front came through the area Tuesday evening, which will allow our temperatures to drop back to around 77 for Rochester today, with 70s & low 80s for the rest of the week. Skies should remain mostly sunny today, however an isolated shower/t-storm could be possible.

We're rain free through Thursday before a slow moving storm system brings rain back to the area as early as Thursday night. Off and on showers and t-storms are possible through Tuesday. At times, over the weekend mainly, we'll be tracking the potential for big boomers. Stay tuned!
