Highway 52 Lane Closures in Olmsted County

Highway 52 Lane Closures in Olmsted County

Drivers will see lane closures on northbound and southbound Highway 52 near Pine Island beginning Monday, May 6, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The closures, originally scheduled to begin May 2, were delayed due to the weather.

The closures are necessary while crews prepare for rock blasting to construct the new East Frontage Road adjacent to Highway 52 in the area between 520th Street and 210th Avenue. During the actual blasting, traffic will be temporarily stopped on northbound and southbound Highway 52. The lane closures will be in effect through Friday, May 10, weather permitting.

AM Snow Turns to Rain

A rare, record-shattering snow yesterday left Rochester under 14.0" of snow, while just to our west, Blooming Prairie saw 18.0"! This water logged snow snapped branches causing power outages, even some buildings collapsed due to the heavy nature of the snow. Believe it or not, snow depths have since come down a little due to melting and compaction as the day went on.

Light snow will continue this morning, no where near what we saw yesterday though. New snow accumulations through the morning will be mainly east, and light, with 1" to 3" expected. We're not done with the moisture quite yet, as this morning's snow gradually switches to rain by this afternoon, with the rain lasting through Sunday! Liquid totals for the entire event will be nearing 5", leading to concerns on area rivers.  We'll be tracking river levels very closely, as we head into the weekend.

Power Outages Widespread In Southeast Minn., Northeast Iowa

(ABC 6 NEWS) - Widespread outages are being blamed on the strange May snowstorm rolling through the area.

RPU reported thousands of outages in the Rochester area. Alliant Energy is working to restore power to thousands of customers in the Albert Lea area.

Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services is also continuing to restore power as they too are experiencing wide spread outages.

If anyone sees downed power lines, they are to assume they are energized.  Stay away and call your service provider.

Sometimes there's only so much you can do to prepare for a storm. So for utility crews, today's been a day of undoing what Mother Nature has done.

"It's caused some outages" said Austin Utilities General Manager Mark Nibaur.

But with only a handful of outages, Austin Utilities has fared better than most.

May Snow Hurts Business Even Before Falling

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Today is the first day in May. Can you believe we are talking about a few inches of snow?

We've seen it time and time again, living in the Midwest, it's obvious snow comes with the territory. But a snowstorm in May? Really?

"I'm not liking it very well, we dairy farm and this could possibly hurt the alfalfa fields and it'd be nice to start getting into the fields,” said Beverly Johnson of Kasson.

A few 70 degree days had most of us thinking we escaped the long winter, but mother nature strikes again, and she's hurting businesses that depend on warm weather.

"As soon as the sun came out, business picked up. As soon as the forecast came out it went right down the tubes," said Bruce Houston, Owner of Houston’s Greenhouse.
