RCTC LIFE President Truman and Foreign Policy
As the vice president of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), Harry S. Truman (HST) ascended to the presidency upon the...death of FDR in 1945. HST was thrust into the center of the volatile domestic and foreign policy issues that prevailed from 1945-1953. Dynamic and controversial, Truman responded decisively to the issues and conclusion of World War II, and then the Cold War that aligned the Western world against the Soviet Union (USSR), a former World War II ally, and the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Truman made the fateful decision to enforce the policy of “Containment” against the Soviets in Eastern Europe; and the Communist nations, rulers, supplies, and military forces of the USSR, PRC, and North Korea in the United Nations “police action” which commenced with the North Korean invasion of South Korea. The historical cast of characters and repercussions were extraordinary, and have influenced international geopolitics from then to the present day. Truman supported the creation and defense of Israel, a decision of historic and contemporary relevance. The decisive Missouri politician left office with low public approval ratings. But many historians have subsequently elevated their assessments of Truman and his leadership. Visuals, class lecture, and discussion will be utilized to illuminate this significant period of American diplomatic history.
