New Local Artist Exhibition at Rochester Art Center

The third exhibition in the Rochester Art Center's local artist exhibition series will feature Amy Creighton’s Woman series and Suzanne E. Szucs’ Breathing in Place project. The exhibit opens Thursday, February 16th.

Amy Creighton is a visual artist working in both painting and photography, with a BFA and an MFA in Photography and Photographic Studies. Her body of work entitled, ‘woman’, was created by asking a myriad of people, "What is the first thing you think of when I say the word, ‘woman’?" The title for each piece is the name of the person who provided her with a response to this question. Through this process Amy creates a platform for the viewer to deconstruct their own understanding of this complex concept. This project was photographed using 4 different cameras utilizing both 120 and 35mm film, as well as one DSLR.

Suzanne E. Szucs’ Breathing in Place project seeks to explore the relationship of the body to the landscape, emphasizing video and photography that acknowledges the presence of the artist in the landscape through the physicality of image making. Although unseen, the image maker holds the camera, becoming a physical presence in the images collected. Compelled to use bodies in the landscape as a disruption to the constancy of the natural world, Szucs is interested in the lakes for their constant change and erosion, the shore as a boundary line shifting and acting on the land, and the inevitability of the horizon. The physical presence in the landscape echoes and disturbs the boundaries of water to land, marking human disruption and discomfort with the natural world.
