Refrigerator & Freezer Recycling Program Starts May 15th

Refrigerator & Freezer Recycling Program Starts May 15th

The Conserve & Save program, serving Austin Utilities, Owatonna Public Utilities and Rochester Public Utilities, is back for a second year. The program allows people looking for new refrigerators and/or freezers to turn in operating but energy inefficient units for a $35 incentive. The incentive is good for each qualifying appliance, with a maximum of two units per program life.

This is the 2nd year for the program, which generated an incredible response in 2011. The 2012 program starts today, May 15th, and runs through October 31, 2012 or until funds are exhausted.

In order to qualify, the refrigerator or freezer must be 10-30 cubic feet, operating secondary unit, in working order and owned by an RPU customer. The appliance will also be picked up, free of charge, inside the customer's home from the address listed on their billing account.

You can get more information by calling 1-877-341-2259 or at www.rpu.org

MnDOT Honors Their Fallen Workers

MnDOT Honors Their Fallen Workers

On Monday morning the Minnesota Department of Transportation honored fallen maintenance workers with a memorial day. Since 1960, MnDOT says 33 of their workers and 15 contractors have died statewide, while trying to keep roads drivable.

As he prepares for work along a busy road, MnDOT maintenance worker Richard Pagel says he worries about being hit.

"You always have that fear- that you know it might be the oddest thing but you always gave that in back of your mind that something could happen," says Pagel.

With crews gearing up for summer road work, Pagel wants to warn drivers to keep an eye out for workers like him.

"You have to be on your guard all the time. You have to stay alert, you have to be aware of your surroundings," says Pagel. "If they just slow down a little bit and remember they've got families too. They want to go home at night just like they do."

New Bars and Restaurants Coming To Rochester

New Bars and Restaurants Coming To Rochester

Three new bar restaurants are opening in Rochester bringing new jobs and revenue to the city.

On Wednesday, The Loop held its grand opening at the bottom of the recently constructed UMR building downtown. It's owned by four friends who graduated from John Marshall high school. This is their third restaurant with two others in the Twin Cities.

The restaurant will have Grand Opening specials throughout the weekend. Their normal happy hour is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day. They also have specials after midnight on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

"It feels good to be open. It's been a long six months of building, planning, and so forth. It finally all came together. It's fun running into people you haven't seen in a long time," says The Loop's co-owner, Derek Link.
