Valuable Coin Dropped in a Red Kettle | Community Spirit
During the Christmas Season, you often hear of valuable coins, diamond jewelry, or gold pieces that are dropped in a Salvation Army Red Kettle. These are typically national stories that the Rochester area has not been part of for a number of years. However, last week a platinum coin was dropped in a Red Kettle, right here in our community! This valuable shekel is a "$25" 1/4 oz. Platinum Eagle Coin, which is selling for around $500 online. The Salvation Army will talk to a couple local coin dealers and find an option that maximizes the cash worth of the donation. "This is the first really valuable coin I have seen in a Rochester area Red Kettle during my five Christmas Seasons in Rochester," shared Major James Frye, local Salvation Army officer. "These finds are not only great donations, but are a lot of fun for the community to learn about. Hopefully, this will inspire others to drop valuable items into our kettles in the future." The Red Kettle drive has 5 days left and needs to raise $100,000 in the Red Kettles, in order to meet the $330,000 Christmas Eve goal. The overall fund drive for the entire Christmas Season (which includes kettle donations) stands at about $400,000, with the hopes of reaching $800,000 by year end.
