Olmsted County Historical Society Receives Two Grants

Olmsted County Historical Society Receives Two Grants

(ABC 6 News) - The Minnesota Historical Society gives out legacy grants each year and this year the History Center in Olmsted County received not one but two.

More than $16,000 has been awarded to Olmsted County Historical Society to help with their ongoing projects. Things like inventory and cataloguing the collections they receive. The money also lets them purchase newspapers on microfilm to make it assessable to people locally.

"When you think about the hundreds of thousands of items that we have in our collection, being able to access them is a big part of what we do," said Janet Timmerman, Executive Director of History Center in Olmsted County.

Within the next month the History Center will be able to catalogue the rest of their vault storage room.

Channel One Plans $1.69 Million Expansion

Channel One Plans $1.69 Million Expansion

(ABC 6 NEWS) - Channel One Regional Food Bank in Rochester is filled to the brim with food that's distributed across Southern Minnesota. Organizers say it's a good problem to have, and they now have a solution.

By next month they will begin a $1.69 million dollar expansion. The project will double the size of the warehouse and a larger cooler will be built. They are also building a new community kitchen for community members to learn how to prepare healthy food.

"Our space is one of the biggest tools we have and it's not meeting our needs right now. Space for all the food and to get the food ready for distribution for the people starving with hunger," said Executive Director Jennifer Woodford.

The expansion project is expected to start next month and will be finished by early next year.
