Drake Hamilton, science policy director at Fresh Energy, will describe effective clean energy and clean air solutions that benefit our economy. The forum is Thursday, November 29th at Johns Marshall High School in Rochester. It begins at 7:00 pm.

Costco Opens Friday

The new Costco opens Friday in Rochester. It is located at 19th Street Northwest and West Circle Drive. Costco has six warehouse stores in Minnesota, all in the Twin Cities area. This will be the first one in the southern part of the state. Also, there's a new Kwik Trip now open near Costco. It is the first gas station in the area to offer compressed natural gas at the pumps. Natural gas is cleaner and a more abundant alternative fuel. It is also more than half the price of a gallon of regular gasoline.

Wells Drying Up Becoming Big Concern

(ABC 6 News) -- The dry conditions over the summer have affected people all across Minnesota and Iowa, especially farmers. However, farmers aren't the only ones with reasons to worry.

"Every time I turn on my faucet, I'm wondering, is there going to be water?" said Lynn Wytaske, a single mom with two kids. Like everyone, water is an important part of Wytaske's life.

"We need it for clothing, feeding, bathing," said Wytaske.

She lives out in the country, in Wasioja. Like everyone around her, she has well water. Her well is pretty old, and she's concerned about it drying up, because of the drought-like conditions from the summer.

"I don't know what I'd do. Hope and pray it doesn't," she said.

Wytaske's neighbor, Shadow Minto has already seen problems with his well.

"It's a pretty big concern because it's not that deep of a well," said Minto.

Utilities Celebrate Energy Awareness Month

Utilities Celebrate Energy Awareness Month

It’s October 1st and the beginning of Energy Awareness Month.

October is typically when we start using less electricity on air conditioning and kick on our heaters.

Energy experts say it's the perfect time to go through your home and check thermostats, insulation, high energy appliances, and your heater.

By doing these few things we use less energy which not only benefits us right away, but it helps utilities keep their rates low.

"We do have incentives from the state to do conservation as well and to promote that with our members. With the cooperative we want our members to be able to afford their energy use and being energy conscious and energy efficient is one of the ways to do that,” People’s Cooperative Services Director of Engineering Gary Fitterer says.

Rochester Fire Fighters Issue Burning Ban

Rochester Fire Fighters Issue Burning Ban

These high temps and dry conditions  are just too dangerous for fires.

That's why many cities and counties have issued 24-hour burning bans.

The Rochester Fire Department is prohibiting all burning including recreational fires.

The local DNR office has advised counties in our area to exercise caution.

Several counties have issued burning bans, but as of right now Olmsted County is in the clear.

However, that could change if conditions continue to get worse.

"Not only do we have the situation with the temperatures and humidity and the current vegetation being dry, but also this is the time of year that the farmers are going in the field with their equipment which is another flame or spark producing element out in the environment,” says Rochester Fire Marshall Larry Mueller.

Fire fighters say Monday’s burning ban could be extended pending the weather.
