Recycle Your Broken Holiday Lights

Recycle Your Broken Holiday Lights

(ABC 6 NEWS) – If you're finding a lot of broken Christmas lights as you decorate your house, here's the perfect solution.

For the second time ever, the Recycling Association of Minnesota is holding a holiday light drive.

Last year, it recycled over 100,000 pounds, and put 200 people back to work.

There are several drop sites across the state, including one in the Government Center in Rochester.

For a complete list of drop site locations, head to www.kaaltv.co

Trade in Your Christmas Lights for $3!

Plan on putting up Christmas lights this year? Well, how would you like to save some money first?

Home Depot is sponsoring the third-annual Eco-Options Christmas Light Trade-In now through November 14th.

Here's how it works.  Just bring in your old, broken, or used lights to any Home Depot location.

They'll recycle them for you, and then give you $3 coupons to be used on new, energy-efficient, LED lights, which are shown to use 80% less energy and last up to 10 times longer.

RNeighborwoods Announces Tree Grant Recipients

Many applied, but only one was chosen.  And in the end, RNeighborwoods decided Rochester's Holmsted Neighborhood was worthy of some free trees.

RNeighborwoods runs the tree grant program every fall and spring, but this year it had a record number of applicants.

The winning neighborhood needs to be lacking trees, or have a high number of ash trees, and at least 20 people willing to plant rain or shine.

"It gets people to know their neighbors. It gets a few more trees in the neighborhoods maybe that have been removed over the years.  Most people don't think that they can plant trees without a permit, so this is a good way to get the city and neighbors involved to plant them properly," said Jacob Ryg, the forester for the city of Rochester.

The Holmsted Neighborhood will get 20 free trees and will have a community planting on October 9th at 9am.

Fall Showcase of Homes and Remodelers Tour This Weekend

The Fall Showcase of Homes features new homes in a variety of subdivisions so the public can see the current styles the builders are using this year.  The Remodelers Tour is an opportunity to visit remodeled homes with varying levels of update.  Entries vary from kitchen remodels, decks, additions, bathrooms, basement finishing, landscapes, or simply a new design.

Both the Fall Showcase of Homes and Remodelers Tour will be held this weekend.  The Fall Showcase of Homes started today at 4pm and will run until 7pm.  The hours for the weekend are 11am to 5pm.  Admission is free for both Remodelers and Showcase of Homes tours.

Green for Life

Governor Pawlenty has declared September 16th, 2010 "Green for Life Day" in Minnesota.

To help commemorate the day, students at Jefferson Elementary helped to plant a 7 foot tree on the northwest corner of the school and the Minnesota Nursury Landscape Association was happy to help.

The association planted 100 trees at schools around the state on Thursday. Nick Sargent of Sargent's Nursury says trees are not only good for the environment, they're good for educating students about the environment as well.

"Trees are very important to our natural world and they clean the air," says Sargent. "They make homes more energy efficient, are a big industrial resource for our state and do great things for the world.

Sargent also says the more kids you can get involved in planting trees, the better we'll all be.
