Suspected Scrapper Dies From Electrocution

(ABC 6 NEWS) - The Olmsted County Sheriff’s department is investigating after deputies found a man dead near an abandoned farm.

Deputies were called just after 8 o’clock Tuesday night to an abandoned residence off of 40th Ave. and Viola Road NE.

Upon arrival they located the body of an adult male near a power pole. The sheriff’s department says after early investigations they believe the male was cutting and scrapping wire from the farm and that he cut into a live electrical wire.

Although the exact cause of death is under investigation they it’s suspected that the male suffered an electrocution.

A vehicle and other items were found at the scene. Investigators are working to identify the male as well as any others that may have been with him at the time.

The sheriff’s department is hoping the anonymous 9-1-1 caller will come forward to help them with the investigation.

Independence Party Discusses Future in Minnesota

Independence Party Discusses Future in Minnesota

(AP) - The plucky third party that has factored heavily in the last four Minnesota governor races is sorting out its role as the next campaign for the top state office begins to take shape.

As the 2014 campaign approaches, Independence Party leaders are discussing whether to go hard at the governor's race or try some other statewide contests where they might do better.

The IP needs at least 5 percent in one statewide race to keep its guaranteed line on the ballot, as well as access to public campaign subsidies.

Tom Horner, the 2010 nominee for governor, says the IP might do better to focus on the Senate race.

Party Chairman Mark Jenkins says he thinks candidates for governor will step forward, perhaps by fall.

History Comes to Life at Wasioja Civil War Days

The community of Wasioja has strong ties with the Civil War. Still, today the historic site of a Civil War Recruiting Station sits in town, where hundreds of men went to serve. This weekend, the community brought history back to life during Civil War Days.

"When I first saw it, it brought tears to my eyes," said Paul Mathison.

Cannons and gun fire could be heard for miles during the reenactment of The Battle of Mill Springs. One battle among many in the Civil War, a time where our nation was split in two.

"It's brother fighting brother, they both spoke the same language and yet there was a certain amount of hatred there and it's sad," said Mathison.

It's one thing to read about history, but to witness what happened in battle tends to make a stronger connection. Especially for those out on the battle field Saturday.

Celebrating Freedom

(ABC 6 News)-- The end of slavery is one of the biggest milestones in United States history. And Saturday, people in Rochester came together to celebrate freedom.

Juneteenth, as it’s called, is celebrated across the country. Those that celebrate say, it marks the day slavery ended in the United States. That day didn’t come until two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

It was a celebration,

"We are here to celebrate freedom,” said Ostell Rowe, Chairperson of the Juneteenth celebration.

And a chance to reflect.

"I understood what it took for me to be here at this time in this place,” said Rowe.

"A sense of community, a sense of pride. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on some of the things that my ancestors triumphed through,” said James Randle, Juneteenth committee member.
