SEMAC Grants Awarded

On May 15, 2012, the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, Inc. (SEMAC) awarded 23 grants for a total of $110,035 in funding to applicants throughout southeastern Minnesota.  This included seven Presenter/Production Assistance Grants for $20,275, six Small Towns/Rural Areas Grants for $15,900, and ten Arts & Cultural Heritage Grants for $73,860.  The latter funding is made possible by the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

SEMAC is the State Arts Board-designated granting authority for local/regional arts producing and sponsoring organizations and disburses funds allocated for this purpose by the Minnesota State Legislature.  The SEMAC region includes the counties of Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona.

Honors Choirs of SE MN Looking for a Few Good Singers

The Honors Choirs of Southeast Minnesota is holding auditions in May and early June. The regional non-profit goup is made up of four choirs for grades 3-12. In this, the group's 20th year, more than 250 singers from 27 southeast Minnesota communities took part.

Honors Choirs offers motivated singers a unique opportunity to experience artisitc challenge and growth. The choirs rehearse Sunday afternoons and evenings throughout the school year in Rochester.

Singers pay tuition, but scholarships are available for those in need.

Law Enforcement Memorial Service

Law Enforcement Memorial Service

On Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., there will be a memorial service to honor  fallen law enforcement officers from Southeast Minnesota.  It will be an outdoor service at the Soldiers Field Memorial. The service will be held rain or shine, but could be cancelled in the event of severe weather.  There will be no makeup date.

Services will be held to recognize the sacrifices of Rochester Police Officers Lloyd Feind, Floyd Haley, Eugene Sutton, Rochester Reserve Officer William Freytag, Olmsted County Deputy Jack Werner, former Rochester native and U.S. Customs Agent Gary Friedli, as well as other fallen officers from the South Eastern region of the state.  This year marks the 35th year anniversary (to the day) of the death of Olmsted County Deputy Jack Werner.

Jay’Corey Jones Memorial Service

There will be a memorial service for Jay’Corey Jones, a 17 year old, Century High School student who passed away on May 6, 2012. The family would like to give the students and community of Rochester an opportunity to celebrate and honor the life of Jay’Cory Jones. The three high school GSAs (Gay-Straight Alliance), Gay & Lesbian Youth Services, and Peace UCC are working with the family to hold this memorial service. The service will be held at Peace United Church of Christ, at 1503 2nd Ave. NE. The memorial will be on Tuesday, May 15th from 6:00 – 7:30PM. Flowers and cards can be sent to Peace UCC. There is a memorial fund set up for donations at Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union, under “Corey’s Fund.”

Gearing Up for Thursdays on First & 3rd

This year marks the sixth year of Thursdays on first & 3rd Summer Market and Music Festival being branded as such, however a smaller scale market actually began two years prior from passionate volunteers and community members.  Thursdays on first & 3rd has become a truly authentic community gathering place with a variety of live music featured on two stages, a tasteful spread of outdoor food choices and a vibrant mix of market vendors showcasing art, craft and baked goods products.  Thursdays on first & 3rd begins June 7th and runs every Thursday through August 30th.

Free Trolley Rides

In celebration of national travel and tourism week, the Rochester Trolley and Tour Company is offering free trolley tours. Rides started Wednesday, May 9th and continue through Thursday, May 10th in Rochester. The tours feature some of Rochester's most famous sights including the Plummer House and Mayowood Mansion. OMC to Host Still Missed Garden Honor Planting Service

Olmsted Medical Center will hold its eleventh annual Honor Planting Service at its “Still Missed” Garden site, located at Olmsted Medical Center Hospital, 1650 Fourth St. SE, at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. The Garden is located to the right of the OMC Hospital’s main entrance.

OMC’s “Still Missed” Garden provides community and support for families who have experienced loss at Olmsted Medical Center. According to OMC social worker and event co-chair Erica Hansen, "This annual event continues to give all of us who have experienced the loss of a loved one a time and place to honor their memories." The garden is truly a living tribute to those memories, and those who attend the service are encouraged to bring an annual blooming plant to be added to the garden to honor and remember their loved ones.
