(ABC 6 News) - Deer hunting season in Minnesota officially kicks off this weekend with the opening of the state's archery deer season.

This time of year is the busiest for Coyote Creek Gun and Archery Shop in Rochester. They've been seeing more and more hunters coming in to get ready for the archery deer season.

The archery pro tells us because it was a late season for crops, that means they should be in a good position for a better hunt this year.

"Everybody is very excited, a lot of trail cam pictures have been coming in, guys are really pumped up this year to have a great harvest," said Trent Kleeberger, Archery Pro for Coyote Creek.

The DNR urges testing for chronic wasting disease is mandatory. Hunters who take deer in permit area 602, which includes Rochester, must register their deer in person and may not remove the carcass from the area until a negative test result is reported.

The five registration stations in this area include:

  • Neptune Bar and Grill, 468 Highway 60, Zumbro Falls.
  • Greenway Cooperative, Pine Island.
  • Archery Headquarters, 3440 Northern Valley Place, Rochester.
  • Gander Mountain, 3470 55th St. NW, Rochester.
  • Kasson Hardware Hank, 11 4th St. SE, Kasson.
