Ruby will attend a book signing event at 1:00 p.m. April 9 at the Barnes and Noble store in the Apache Mall.

That's the word from pet shelters across the U.S.

Tuesday was the seventeenth annual Spay Day, which is designed to promote spaying and neutering.

Camp Companion in Rochester says it's something that's very important.

Paws and Claws Charity Auction

Paws and Claws will be holding its 21st Annual Charity Auction Saturday, October 9, 2010. The auction will be held at the Kahler Grand Hotel Ballroom with a silent auction starting at 4:30pm and a live auction starting at 7:00pm. Ticket price is $15 per person and includes a meal and admission to the auction. Tickets are available at the door. There will be live music by Fair Trade Trio between 4:30pm and 7:00pm.

The silent auction includes more than 100 themed baskets and many other items in categories such as Home and Garden, Children and Pets, and Miscellaneous. The live auction includes some themed baskets, furniture, entertainment packages, and much more. There will also be a wine raffle and drawing for a unique wine rack.

This Race is for the Dogs

Runners with two and four legs are being encouraged to participate in an upcoming race in Rochester.

Saturday's "New Leash on Life" 5K is for dogs... and their human running partners.

This is the first year for the event.  It is a fundraiser to support programs offered by the race organizers, Zumbro Valley Mental Health and Paws and Claws Humane Society.  The groups hope that the 5K dog race and 3K dog walk increases awareness about mental illness and the positive impact pets have on reducing stress and anxiety for their owners.

Man Hospitalized After Allegedly Killing 4 Cats and Threatening Wife

A 63-year-old Rochester man could soon be facing a slew of charges after he allegedly killed four of his pets, and threatened his domestic partner with a knife.

It happened on the 1500 block of 8 1/2 Street Southeast.

According to police, the man had been hospitalized for mental health issues, and was just released, but was still suffering side effects.

Officers say he killed his four cats either by blunt force trauma or by strangling them.

He then allegedly threatened to stab his 63-year-old wife.

Police didn't arrest him, but haven't ruled out the possibility of charges.

He's currently being evaluated at St. Mary's Hospital.

Dog and Cat Health Fair

The Rescued Animal Coalition of Southeast Minnesota is holding a dog and cat health fair. It is set for Saturday, September 18th at the Rochester Feed and Country Store. The fair goes from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. It is free of charge. There will be seminars on chiropractics for your pet, agility training, massage, and k-9 patrol demonstrations. There will also be vendors with the latest in healthy dog/cat supplements. A veterinarian will also be on hand to update pets with vaccination shots. Microchipping will be available for $20 and baths for $10.

Paws And Claws Humane Society Fundraiser

The first ever Paws and Claws Humane Society benefit will be held this weekend.

It will take place at Mickey's Irish Saloon from 3pm-2am.  The animals will also be on display at the event, along with live music, a silent auction, a live DJ and much more.

All proceeds will go towards opening the new humane society on the northwest side of Rochester.

Bring the family from 3pm-8pm.  That's a special time designated for kids and parents.  That is when the cats and dogs will be on the patio.  Sno cones will be availabe for $1 and food will be catered for free from The Crown Restaurant from 3pm-7pm.

In the later hours, after family time, there will be live music and shots for sale, with all the benefits going to Paws and Claws.
