Rally Reinforces Message And Unity For Local Tea Party

On tax day-eve, dozens of supporters showed up for a Tea Party rally in Rochester. Organizers wanted to re-emphasize limited government, fiscal responsibility, and a free market economy. Other topics discussed included the Voter ID amendment, Right To Work, and the upcoming local sales tax extension. With the election this year, members wanted to bring everyone together.
"Ya know it's really important to have one day where everybody really plans and can make it and just really show support for each other and support that all the community sees that we're out here and we're still strong," says Cindy Maves, co-chair of the Rochester Tea Party Patriots.
Local politicians and upcoming challengers also set up booths to reach out to potential supporters.

Concern Over Youth Using New Gun Range

Concern Over Youth Using New Gun Range

A new bill in the Minnesota legislature would allow youth to use publicly-owned shooting ranges for firearm safety classes.

The Southeast Minnesota Public Safety Training Center will have a gun range, once its completed in 2013. But Olmsted County Sheriff David Mueller is concerned over security and an extra cost to taxpayers.

"I think there's a potential for this to be utilized but I think from the standpoint of the legislature we don't want to be in a position from a security standpoint or liability standpoint to expose some additional experiences of liability," said Sheriff Mueller.

Mueller says it could cost them an extra $500,000 to install baffling, so bullets don't go onto adjacent properties.

Republican Representative Mike Benson of Rochester says he supports the bill and sees it as an opportunity for law enforcement to work with kids on gun safety.

Bill Toughens Synthetic Drug Laws

Bill Toughens Synthetic Drug Laws

Tougher penalties for people caught selling synthetic drugs could be on the way in Minnesota. A proposed bill would include charges for sellers of drugs containing analogs, which are used to make synthetic drugs.

Sellers would be charged with a felony and could serve up to five years in prison. Currently, violators are charged with a gross misdemeanor.

Prosecutors say growing use of the drugs makes the new law necessary.

"This is bad stuff. You know a year ago we didn't know much about this stuff so now we're in a better spot and able to equate specific penalties you know with specific crimes," said Mark Ostrem, Olmsted County Attorney.

Last July, it became illegal to possess or sell synthetic drugs in Minnesota.

Local GLBT Group Makes Statewide Partnership

Local GLBT Group Makes Statewide Partnership

In less than 9 months, Minnesotans will have to decide whether or not to allow gay marriage.

To get the word out, one local group is already reaching out.

Southeast Minnesota Gay and Lesbian Community Services, recently joined forces with the Minnesotans United for all Families Coalition.

The statewide coalition includes over 170 groups ranging from non-profits and businesses to churches and politicians.

Organizers say the partnership was made to strengthen community ties.

"It’s to bring these voices to the forefront. To let people know that they're not alone if they oppose the anti-marriage amendment. That there are organizations, individuals and leaders in this community who stand with you,” GLCS Board Member Jeffrey Jurewicz says.

The issue will be on the November ballot.

Supporters from both sides have been working for months, spreading their message.

Legislation to Deter Teen Smoking

Legislation to Deter Teen Smoking

Information from Sen. Carla Nelson's Office

Rochester- Senator Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) and Representative Mike Benson (R-Rochester) announced Monday legislation that would increase the price of cigarettes by $1.29 to deter teen smoking.  The bill will direct revenue to be used to repay the debt of the 2011 education shift and lower the tax burden on job creators statewide.

Senator Nelson and Representative Benson were joined Monday at Hope Lodge in Rochester by Dr. Raymond Gibbons of the Mayo Clinic, Scott Heck, Chair-Elect of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce and Michael Muñoz, Superintendent of Rochester Public Schools.

“This bill will help reduce the number of teenage smokers in the State of Minnesota,” said Representative Benson.  “Not only will the revenue collected help reduce expenses in other areas of state government, but it will also lead to fewer people who start smoking and give more smokers the reason they need to quit.”
