State Senator Mike Parry Runs for Congress

State Senator Mike Parry Runs for Congress

A local campaign kicked off today in Rochester.

State Senator Mike Parry, a Republican from Waseca, says he's running against Congressman Tim Walz.

Parry was at the Canadian Honker Restaurant in Rochester Thursday morning, talking with potential voters.

The DFL Party calls Parry a "radical tea party politician", but Parry says he's seeking higher office because Walz isn't doing a good enough job.

"We need good representation in southern Minnesota," says Sen. Parry. "This is a great part of the state and a great state and Congressman Walz hasn't been representing the folks as he tells them he's going to represent them when he's in the district."

For the moment, Parry is the only Republican to declare for Walz's congressional seat.

Wabasha County Commissioners Hire Outside Attorney

The Wabasha County Board of Commissioners has taken another step towards the potential firing of County Administrator David Johnson.

With a 3-2 vote, the Board of Commissioners hired an independent attorney on Tuesday to represent it in the matter.

As ABC 6 News reported earlier this month, several commissioners say they could save the county nearly $100,000 by terminating the administrator's position.

But Johnson says it's nothing more than a "political agenda."

The Winona Daily News reports the attorney is costing the county $200 an hour with a maximum cost of $5,000.

The attorney is expected to present a legal opinon on the issue within a week.

Johnson did not return a phone call today.

The End of Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Reading & Community Discussion

On the eve of the official end to the U.S. military’s "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" (DADT) policy, veteran Bronson Lemer will read from his memoir The Last Deployment: How a Gay, Hammer-Swinging Twentysomething Survived a Year in Iraq, and lead a community discussion on the controversial policy. The event is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19th, at Barnes & Noble Bookstore (Chateau Theatre) in downtown Rochester.

According to Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, since being enacted in 1993 by President Clinton, more than 13,000 military members have been discharged from the U.S. military under DADT. The policy prohibits military personnel from discriminating against or harassing other military personnel because of their sexual orientation, as well as prohibiting members of the military from serving openly as a gay man or woman.
