Student Becomes Finalist, You Can Help School Win $10,000!

Rochester Catholic Schools is proud to announce that third grader, Kyle Pido, of St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School has been named 1 of 12 finalist in Scotties national “Trees Rock” video contest. St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School is eligible to win $10,000 in prize money for sustainable projects such as tree plantings, outdoor classrooms, playgrounds and gardens. 

Kids who entered the contests were required to create a video up to 3 minutes on the importance of trees - to themselves, their school and their community. “I am excited about the valuable experience and possibilities this brings for Kyle and grateful for those who are supporting us,” said Don Valentine, Principal at St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School.

Luther College Symphony Orchestra to Perform

Luther College Symphony Orchestra to Perform

The Luther College Symphony Orchestra will present a concert of works by Wagner, Elgar and Tchaikovsky at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 in the Rochester Century High School, 2525 Viola Road NE, Rochester, as part of their January 2013 tour. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. A freewill offering will be taken.

The program begins with one of the best-loved operatic overtures of the 19th century, the Prelude to Act One of "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" by Richard Wagner.

Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor will follow, with Eric Kutz, Luther associate professor of music, as the soloist on cello.

SocialICE, Rochester's Ice Bar is Back!

SocialICE, Rochester's Ice Bar is Back!

SocialICE—Rochester Minnesota’s Ice Bar, features seven 12-foot ice uniquely designed and themed ice bars. Each bar will have a unique theme along with a signature drink. Bar themes range from Ice Games, where you can participate in games made of ice, to Mardi Gras. The hours of operation will expand this year and be open from 4:00-10:00pm. Be sure to bring your camera to snap some photographs of the exceptional photo opportunities. Enjoy the ambiance of the ice and lighting as you sit in the ice lounge, drink from real ice glasses, and enjoy live music. Live bands perform in the skyway overlooking the crowds below on the Peace Plaza, with the music piped outdoors. New this year will be live ice carving demonstrations and kids’ activities from 4:00-6:00pm, each night. Also, check out the Wall office, featuring ice sculptures sponsored by several downtown businesses.

B.B. King Coming to Rochester

B.B. King Coming to Rochester

For more than half a centruy, B.B. King has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. At age 76, he continues to wear his King of Blues crown well. King will be performing at Rochester's Mayo Civic Center Sunday, May 19th at 7:30. Tickets go on-sale Friday, January 18th at noon. Tickets range from $39.50 to $75.

Salvation Army Dinner Christmas Day

The Salvation Army will once again serve a Christmas dinner on Tuesday, December 25, 2012.  The annual tradition begins at 11:30am at The Salvation Army Caring Partners Adult Day Program building at 115 First Avenue NE in Rochester with a brief service followed by dinner at Noon served by community volunteers and Corps staff. Proceeds from the Thanksgiving Day Moms On The Run 5K Gobble Wobble helped The Salvation Army fund dinners on both holidays.

Record Red Kettle Donations

At the close of the 2012 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign The Salvation Army announces a preliminary grand total estimate of $356,275 received as kettle donations.  This amount represents a monumental effort from Christmas Eve bell ringers and generous shoppers, topping the 2011 final total by an estimated $1,820 and establishing a new record total for the Red Kettles in Rochester.
