RCTC Honors Outstanding Educators

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Three Rochester Community and Technical College instructors were named Outstanding Educators of the Year. The school says they exemplify excellence, high-quality teaching, learning and service.

"It was totally unexpected and it just means the world to me," says Cathy DesLauriers who received the award for her first time. The veterinary technology instructor and two others were nominated by students before being selected.

"I think it's getting to know the students on a one to one basis, ya know, spending time with them if they have questions. [So] they feel comfortable to come to me and ask," says DesLauriers.

"It was very thrilling. It's always nice to be recognized for what you do," says History professor, Chad Israelson, who received a similar honor back in 2003.

Red-Shirting Kids

Red-Shirting Kids

The word is commonly associated with college athletics.

An athlete is red-shirted when they are held out of their sport for a year allowing them to grow and perform at a higher level by gaining an extra year to compete.

Now it’s become a trend with our children.

A psychologist tells us the trend of holding kids back to give them a competitive edge in athletics has been on the rise.

Dr. Jennifer White Baughan says the number of kids being held back has tripled since the 70s, "The question is what kind of balance. Do we have in this country on the actual value added that we are giving to our children when we are moving them ahead?"

Research does show, if a child is to be held back, the ideal time is kindergarten or 1st grade.
