DWI Enforcement Increase For St. Patrick's Day Weekend

(ABC 6 News) - Local law enforcement agencies are hoping drivers will think twice before drinking and then getting behind the wheel this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Even so, there will be extra DWI patrols out all weekend through the end of the month. Along with drunk drivers, officers will be looking for speeders as well as aggressive drivers.

Rochester police and Olmsted County will both have 5 extra officers out at various times. The enforcement is part of Minnesota's Toward Zero Deaths initiative.

Last year on St. Patrick’s Day 346 people were arrested for DWI’s in Minnesota.

(ABC 6 News) - State Police say a Rochester man was killed while driving near the Twin Cities Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say 66-year-old Harry J. Long III was driving east on Highway 494 in Mendota Heights when his 2000 GMC Jimmy rolled near Pilot Knob Road. That's just east of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport. Long died as a result of the accident.

67-year-old Louise Long, also of Rochester, was in the SUV as well. Police say she suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the accident was not provided by the police report, however it does say the highway was dry at the time of the accident.
